The World of 30XX
It has been over a millenium since the original creation of a mechanical being, a robot, by Dr. Thomas Xavier Light and Dr. Albert Wily. Even as these two scientists would later feud over the fate of the earth using their respective creations, it is doubtful that either of the two were prepared for what their research would lead to. Wily's multiple failed attempts at world domination, the creation of the first free-willed robot, the creation of Reploids and the subsequent Maverick Revolutions 100 years later, the Neo Arcadian Wars two centuries after THAT, the Game of Destiny that immediately followed... the existance of robotics has been both a blessing and a curse to the world.
By 30XX, the damage caused by the half dozen or so massive wars has finally been repaired, and the world looks much as it did towards the beginning of 20XX. Peace finally has a general hold on the world, with humans and Reploids finally living in complete harmony. Reploids still possess artificial life-spans, and the line between man and machine is more blurred than ever. Feral Mechaniloids and Mavericks still run wild outside of civilized areas, but the threat they pose has been nullified thanks to the Great Discovery.
The Great Discovery, an event that occured around 28XX, was a scientific breakthrough that had unlocked the secret of BioMetal, revealing the strange objects for what they were; the sealed personas of powerful Reploids from long ago. Once the true nature of BioMetal was discovered, the prospect of many more BioMetals existing elsewhere was realized almost immediately, and thus did exploration teams, Hunters and Raiders alike, search for the lost BioMetals. The searches posed results quickly, and by the turn of the century, over a hundred thousand BioMetals had been found, as had perfect hosts to harness their powers! By 30XX, one out of every 30 humans is likely a chosen holder of a BioMetal, and is thus able to MegaMerge. With the Game of Destiny having ended long ago, this was much less of a problem than anyone would've imagined.
Being sentient beings in their own right, the BioMetals quickly struck an alliance with the Sages Gemini, myself and Master Thomas, two human minds in Reploid bodies who rule over the world and see to it's safety. It was decided that the BioMetals that were found would be passed down from generation to generation in families where a Chosen One existed. Any new BioMetals that were found would be presented with potential human partners. Often, hundreds would flock to the discovery of a new BioMetal, hoping to become it's chosen holder.
This has been the norm for many years, but occasionally anomalies still occur. Sometimes BioMetals are discovered by accident, immediately choosing the finder as it's host. In cases where the new host is not a registered citizen, this has caused several problems. In addition, several Chosen Ones, or "Mega Men" as Capcom of America would like to call them, had gone rogue over the years, attempting to use the powers of their BioMetals to wreak havoc upon the world. That is why every Mega Man (God, HATE that name!) is burdened with the task of defending their homelands from any threat that would seek to harm it. A small price to pay for such power, many would agree.
But what of Reploids? Well, little has changed in their regard. Being machines, many Reploids are outfitted for battle and similar feats of prowess, making BioMetal unneccesary, and thus a strictly human privelege. As it is, only one Reploid in known history has ever MegaMerged with a non-Model W BioMetal, and he died long ago. This means little to the Reploids, though, as through the slightly morbid practice of recycling fragments of destroyed machines, fragments of shattered BioMetals are occasionally built right in to newer Reploids. When this occurs, the Reploid gains an innate ability to transform into a powerful Pseudoroid at will. Ironically, approximately 1 in 30 Reploids possess this ability.
Society itself has changed because of BioMetals as well. When one person is chosen by a BioMetal, he/she often gains great social stature as a result. In fact, most if not all (Barf!) Mega Men belong to noble families, most of which became noble to begin with because of the BioMetal. Mega Men (Yargh) usually mix freely with the rest of the world, though some people dislike and shun them, seeing them as freaks. Likewise, some Mega Men (gag) develop a superiority complex, believing themselves to be above all others. On top of that, some BioMetals contain personalities that promote such behavior. As a result, some Mega Men will become as Mavericks, a bane to society around them. Reploids are no better off since the sudden return of the infamous Sigma Virus. Though a vaccine program for the virus has been discovered, it cannot be administered until after infection to be useful, and thus many Reploids are at risk of going Maverick. Nobody knows how or why the virus has returned... but when a Pseudoroid goes Maverick, chaos usually follows.
So, what are you in this world? One of the Chosen, wielding a BioMetal to protect your homeland? Or perhaps you desire to rule the world and crush society underneath your feet. Maybe you are one of the lucky Reploids to be born as a Pseudoroid? Whatever your path, let me be the first to welcome you to our wonderful little world.
